Background of the Study
The rapid advancement of technology has significantly transformed the landscape of Human Resource Management (HRM), with automation playing a central role in streamlining HR functions. Automation in HRM refers to the use of digital tools and artificial intelligence (AI) to execute tasks such as recruitment, payroll management, performance evaluation, employee engagement, and compliance tracking. The integration of automation in HR processes is intended to enhance efficiency, reduce human errors, and improve decision-making (Adeola & Uchenna, 2024).
Zenith Bank Plc, one of Nigeria’s leading financial institutions, has increasingly adopted automation in its HR processes to align with global trends and improve operational efficiency. In Yobe State, where the banking industry faces challenges such as talent acquisition, employee retention, and performance monitoring, automation has the potential to mitigate these challenges by facilitating seamless HR operations. However, despite its advantages, automation in HR has been met with concerns regarding job displacement, employee resistance to change, and potential technical failures (Obafemi & Salisu, 2023).
This study aims to examine the extent to which automation has influenced HR functions at Zenith Bank Plc, Yobe State. By assessing the impact of automation on recruitment, performance management, and employee relations, the research will provide insights into how technology is reshaping HRM in the banking sector.
Statement of the Problem
The introduction of automation in HRM has brought about significant changes in how HR functions are executed at Zenith Bank Plc, Yobe State. While automation enhances efficiency and minimizes errors, its adoption has led to concerns about job security, workforce adaptation, and potential system failures. Employees may resist automation due to fears of redundancy, while HR managers may struggle with integrating automated systems into existing workflows (Okonkwo & Musa, 2024). Despite its potential benefits, there is a lack of empirical studies on the effectiveness of automation in HR processes within the Nigerian banking sector, particularly in Yobe State. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining how automation has impacted HR functions at Zenith Bank Plc.
